Confirmed: Tommy Setford joins Stevenage on loan

Stevenage have signed Tommy Setford on loan for the season, a move designed to give the goalkeeper regular experience of senior football.

The 20-year-old joined Arsenal from Ajax ahead of the 2024/25 season and made his debut in a 3-0 League Cup win over Preston that October. As the club’s third-choice goalkeeper, opportunities have understandably been limited, although Mikel Arteta did bring him on for the final three minutes of February’s FA Cup win over Wigan.

With Karl Hein joining Werder Bremen permanently this summer after spending last season on loan, Arsenal moved quickly to sign Illan Meslier following his release by Leeds United. The Frenchman’s arrival was always expected to pave the way for Setford to head out on loan, although finding the right opportunity has taken longer than anticipated.

Having been linked with a move to Las Palmas, Stevenage represents less glamorous surroundings, but that’s not really the point of this move. After two years spent training regularly with Arteta’s first team, the next step for Steford is to play consistently and show what he can do in a senior environment.

Hopefully, the England under-21 international gets exactly that in his new surroundings.
