Arsenal sanction another deadline-day exit as midfielder heads to the Bundesliga
Fabio Vieira has completed a permanent move from Arsenal to Hamburger SV, bringing his four-year association with the Gunners to an end.
Arsenal confirmed the transfer on Tuesday after the two clubs reached an agreement for the 26-year-old to return to Hamburg following his successful loan spell last season.
The deal is worth around £8.6million (€10m) according to The Athletic, with Vieira leaving after making 49 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions.
Vieira joined Arsenal from Porto in June 2022 in a deal reportedly worth up to £34 million after emerging as one of Portuguese football’s most highly-rated young midfielders.
However, the playmaker struggled to establish himself as a regular under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, with injuries and competition for places limiting his opportunities.
Vieira made 33 Premier League appearances during his first two seasons in north London, starting only five of those matches.
One of his most memorable contributions came during the 2023 Community Shield, when he converted the decisive penalty as Arsenal defeated Manchester City in a shootout at Wembley.
The Portuguese midfielder returned to boyhood club Porto on loan for the 2024/25 season before spending the following campaign with Hamburg.
It was in Germany that Vieira rediscovered some of his best form, becoming an important player during Hamburg’s first season back in the Bundesliga following seven years outside the top flight.
Vieira scored seven goals and supplied five assists across 29 Bundesliga appearances, finishing as Hamburg’s leading league goalscorer.
Hamburg had made their desire to retain him clear following that productive campaign, although negotiations with Arsenal continued throughout the summer.
The clubs eventually made significant progress during the final days of the window before reaching an agreement for a permanent transfer.
Vieira’s departure also provides Arsenal with another outgoing fee as the club continue reshaping the squad before the transfer deadline.
His exit comes after two consecutive seasons away from the Emirates Stadium and offers him the opportunity to settle permanently at a club where he has already demonstrated his quality.
Arsenal thanked Vieira for his contribution and wished the midfielder and his family well for the future, with the transfer now subject only to the completion of regulatory processes.
