Arsenal agree £50m deal to sign England defender Ezri Konsa, medical tomorrow

Arsenal have agreed a £50million fee with Aston Villa to sign Ezri Konsa, with the England international now closing in on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Konsa has been Arsenal’s first-choice defensive target throughout the transfer window, although negotiations initially stalled because the Premier League champions were unwilling to meet Villa’s £60million valuation.

BBC Sport revealed last week that Arsenal had reopened talks with Villa but remained short of an agreement. That prompted the Gunners to explore alternatives, including Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah.

However, Arsenal subsequently refocused their efforts on Konsa and the two clubs have now reportedly reached a compromise worth £50million. The defender is expected to complete the remaining formalities, including a medical scheduled for Thursday, before becoming the latest addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The deal represents significant progress for Arsenal, who urgently needed another right-sided defender following William Saliba’s long-term injury. Jurrien Timber’s recent fitness problems have only added to the need for greater depth in an area where Arteta’s options had become increasingly stretched.

Konsa should be capable of contributing immediately. The 28-year-old has accumulated extensive Premier League and European experience since joining Aston Villa in July 2019, making 286 appearances across seven seasons.

He featured 48 times in all competitions last season, scoring twice and providing one assist as Unai Emery’s side won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League. That successful campaign secured Villa’s place in the 2026/27 Champions League.

Konsa also played in every match of England’s World Cup campaign as the Three Lions finished third. His ability to operate both centrally and at right-back makes him a particularly attractive addition for Arteta, whose defensive system regularly requires players to fulfil multiple roles.

Konsa has many qualities, including good pace, high-level passing and strong in the duels.

The defender has not appeared during Villa’s pre-season schedule, including their 2-1 Uefa Super Cup defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. Emery previously explained that Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins had been given four weeks off following the World Cup and were due to return after Villa’s final friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach – though all three could now leave.

That explanation may have temporarily eased speculation surrounding his absence, but the latest breakthrough means Konsa now looks set to continue his preparations in north London.

At £50million, Arsenal are making another sizeable investment, but they are acquiring a proven England international approaching the peak of his career. Konsa can cover Saliba immediately, compete with Timber and White at right-back and provide the versatility required to remain an important member of the squad once Arsenal’s injured defenders return.
