13 players who have played for Arsenal and Brighton

Arsenal are preparing for a Saturday afternoon trip to the South Coast as they face an in-form Brighton team. The Gunners are looking to keep their 100% record going in the Premier League, but it won't be easy against Fabian Hurzeler's side, who are the highest-scoring team in the league so far.

Several storylines will emerge during Saturday's game, including Ben White and Viktor Gyokeres, both of whom played for Brighton before joining Arsenal, but they aren't the only ones. 13 players have played for both clubs in their history, including the current Gunners duo...

Ben White joined Arsenal in 2021 after he graduated through the Brighton academy, before becoming a regular fixture in their starting XI. He had loan spells with Newport County, Peterborough United and Leeds during his time with the Seagulls, but still ended up making 41 appearances for Brighton.

Gyokeres' time at Brighton wasn't as successful. The Seagulls signed him from Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna in 2018; however, he only managed to score one goal in eight games. He found his English success at Coventry after leaving Brighton, before moving to Sporting CP and later, of course, Arsenal.

Trossard ended three years at the Emirates this summer when he joined Turkish side Besiktas, but before he came to Arsenal, he had spent the previous four seasons at Brighton, scoring 25 goals in 116 league games.

The Australian goalkeeper was Brighton's starter between 2017 and 2021, making over 120 appearances. In his final year at Brighton, Ryan joined Arsenal on loan to be a backup to Aaron Ramsdale, but he never joined the Gunners permanently, making just three appearances.

Akpom never turned into the striker that Arsenal were hoping for, as he ended up coming through at Hale End, but only making four appearances for the Gunners. In 2017, he went on loan to Brighton, where he made just 10 appearances. The 30-year-old is now at Ipswich Town, after joining the Tractor Boys in the summer.

Welbeck had success for both Arsenal and Brighton. He scored 32 goals in 126 games for Arsenal between 2014 and 2019. Welbeck then joined the Seagulls in 2020, where he scored 51 goals in 201 games. He's now back in London, playing for Chelsea.

Former England international Matthew Upson spent six years with Arsenal between 1997 and 2003, although he spent most of that time on loan at Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, and Reading. He joined Brighton in 2013, originally on loan from Stoke City, before making the move permanent. The defender made over 60 appearances for the Seagulls, leaving in 2014. He retired in 2016, after a season with MK Dons.

Perhaps the most talented player to feature for both Arsenal and Brighton, Dickov first played for the Gunners after coming through the academy. He spent six years of his professional career with Arsenal, making 21 appearances in total, before joining Man City, where he found success. He had a short spell for Brighton in 1994 on loan, scoring five goals in eight games, whilst he was still at Arsenal. He retired in 2011 after a spell with Oldham Athletic.

Former Irish international forward Graham Barrett only made two appearances for Arsenal despite graduating through the academy. He ended up leaving the Gunners in 2002 to join Brighton, where he played 30 games, but only managed to find the net once. After that, Barrett had spells with Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday and Falkirk, before retiring at Shamrock Rovers in 2010.

Flatts was a midfielder who came through the Gunners' academy, making his professional debut for Arsenal in 1992. He went on a series of loan moves between 1992 and 1996, which means he only played 16 games for Arsenal. One of his loans was to Brighton, where he made 10 appearances. He was released in 1996, which ended his professional career.

Hoyte was another who came through Arsenal's academy. He made just one appearance for the Gunners and also spent just one season at Brighton on loan from North London in 2009. He played 18 games for the Seagulls.

After that, the defender had spells with Gillingham, Dagenham and Redbridge and Maidstone United. He is still playing now for Isthmian League South East club Sittingbourne, aged 36.

Goalkeeper Pates played for Arsenal between 1990 and 1993, making just 21 appearances. During that time, he went on loan to Brighton in 1990, where he played 17 games. After leaving Arsenal, he moved to Brighton permanently and went on to make another 50 appearances. He retired in1997, playing for Romford.

Another goalkeeper, Shaaban played for Arsenal between 2002 and 2004 as a backup, after the Gunners signed him from Swedish side Djurgårdens IF. He made just three appearances for the Gunners and left in 2005 to join Brighton, where he made just six appearances. He then went back to Sweden and retired in 2012 with Hammarby IF.
