“100 per cent I’d take him” – Ally McCoist backs Rangers loan move for Arsenal Starlet

Max Dowman’s future is already becoming an interesting talking point ahead of January, with Rangers legend Ally McCoist urging his former club to make a move for the Arsenal teenager.

Dowman has remained with Mikel Arteta’s senior squad this season, although opportunities have understandably been limited for the 16-year-old. He did feature as a late substitute during Saturday’s miserable 3-0 defeat at Brighton. Prior to that Dowman featured as Arsenal beat Ipswich 4-2 in the Carabao Cup third round, scoring two of the Gunners four goals.

We recently covered how Arsenal turned down Jack Wilshere’s request to sign Dowman for Luton, but the situation could potentially look rather different when the January window arrives.

McCoist would take Dowman at Rangers

According to TEAMtalk, McCoist believes Rangers would be an excellent destination if Arsenal decide that regular senior football is the next step in Dowman’s development.

Asked about taking the youngster to Ibrox, McCoist told talkSPORT:

“Aye, I would take him, 100 per cent I’d take him at Ibrox.”

The former Rangers striker also believes a temporary move could make sense if Arteta feels Dowman is ready for it.

“I wouldn’t have a problem with it if Mikel Arteta thought it was the best thing for his development.”

Arteta keeping Arsenal’s options open

Interestingly, Arteta has not completely ruled out a future loan despite Arsenal deciding to keep Dowman with the first team for now.

Ahead of the Brighton match, the manager explained:

“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision.”

That feels significant.

Arsenal clearly wanted Dowman around the senior squad during the opening months of this campaign, but his development must remain the priority. By January, Arteta and his staff should have a much clearer picture of how many meaningful minutes the teenager is likely to receive during the second half of the season.

If those opportunities remain limited, interest from clubs such as Rangers and Luton is unlikely to disappear.
