“ I have been begging” Arteta wants Premier League to make one change

Mikel Arteta has revealed that he wants the Premier League to allow teams to name more players in their matchday squads, admitting that he has been begging for the change to be made.

At present, teams can name only 20 players in a matchday squad, meaning there are nine substitutes available in addition to the starting XI. Although this number can appear sufficient because clubs are permitted to make five substitutions, Arteta believes the demands placed on players require greater squad flexibility.

Teams can have up to 30 players, and allowing more of them to be named on the bench would give managers additional options during matches. It could also help them respond to how games develop while ensuring they have more players available to make an impact.

However, the Premier League has refused to expand matchday squads and expects clubs to plan around the 20 players they are currently permitted to name for matches.

Arteta calls for change

Arteta has been one of the voices among managers calling for a change to the rules and has once again spoken about the subject. The Arsenal boss revealed that he has spent considerable time asking the Premier League to expand the number of players that can be included.

He said via The Sun:

“That’s why I have been begging the Premier League to extend those numbers just for the welfare of the players, which is the most important thing.

“I think every squad needs more than 20 outfield players, ideally, to sustain the level of demand in international games that we have.

Rules remain unchanged

Arteta believes player welfare should be the main consideration when deciding whether matchday squads should be expanded. With clubs carrying large squads, he feels managers should have more flexibility when selecting their teams.

His comments also highlight the demands facing players who compete across different competitions. Having more options available could allow managers to respond better to injuries, fatigue and the changing circumstances of matches.

However, despite Arteta’s calls for an increase, the current rules remain in place. Clubs must therefore continue working within the existing limits when selecting their matchday squads.

Arteta accepts that managers must follow the regulations while continuing to believe that an expansion would benefit players and teams.

“But these are the rules, and within the rules, we have to play.”
