Ian Wright names the player he wishes Arsenal had signed this summer

Ian Wright has given his verdict on Arsenal’s transfer window.

Many fans were left disappointed after the Gunners missed out on a marquee attacking signing.

Arsenal had tried to sign Vinicius Jr and Julian Alvarez but were unable to lure either of them from Spain.

Despite letting several attacking players leave, they only signed Christos Tzolis, leaving them a touch short in the final third.

Wright stops short of calling the window a disaster, but he’s not entirely satisfied either.

When asked on Stick to Football whether Arsenal would regret not signing a certain player, Wright outlined his thoughts on the window.

“The disappointing thing — because it’s not a disastrous window — but if I’m Mikel, I wouldn’t be happy about the way this window’s gone, simply because we’ve gone another window where we’ve not got that forward,” he said.

“We’re talking about a manager who, even after Bayern Munich, when we lost in the Champions League semi-final, was talking about the player we need to take us to that level. We’ve done it again against Paris — we didn’t have the player to break them so we could score.

“That’s the player that Mikel wanted. Now, when you consider that they chased Vini to the end of the earth, and left Morgan Rogers kind of dangling.

Gary Neville pushed back, wondering whether Arsenal needed Morgan Rogers specifically. But Wright thinks they did.

“I think we did,” he said. “I think that’s the player that he wanted. And again, it’s a position on the pitch where we need that player.”

We have to say, Wrighty’s right here.

Arsenal were put off by Aston Villa’s £117million valuation of Rogers, giving Chelsea a free run at him.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing. Had Arsenal moved earlier, before Elliot Anderson’s £116million move to Manchester City set the benchmark, they would almost certainly have got him for less.

Rogers was Mikel Arteta’s primary target at the start of the summer and the Gunners were confident of a deal around £80million. And the player wanted the move.

But Andrea Berta’s ‘plate-spinning’ strategy — sounding out alternative targets such as Bradley Barcola — left Arsenal dithering and Villa increased the price tag.

Rogers will play at the Emirates on Sunday — against Arsenal. Chelsea are being touted as Arsenal’s biggest title rivals this season.

But coming to the Premier League champions poses their first real test.
